The barrel was designed to produce lead-free drinking water to satisfy California's Proposition 65. This proposition was enacted in 1986 and is regularly updated with new chemicals whose concentrations in drinking water must be kept below specified levels. It can be fitted with in-line filters to eliminate PFASs, algae, lead, bromates, etc. A filter can be installed before the pressurized source water (provided by municipalities or other source) enters the water barrels holding tank. The barrel is filled, the air is evacuated and because the source water is forever on, the barrel is now pressurized. The water is then circulated during every use.
