In July of 2001, Genetic Models Inc was acquired by Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (NYSE:CRL). With the major emphasis on rodent production for research purposes, Genetic Models is now part of Charles River Labs. As a result of recent achievements in mapping the human genome, scientists are in need of disease-specific research models. Charles River/GMI offer proprietary and disease-specific rat models for use in biomedical research. These animals serve as a more accurate model of human disease and, therefore, a better predictor of the potential success of new drug treatments for conditions such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and kidney disease.
