Public Profile

In September 2004, Foster Miller was acquired by QinetiQ, Britain’s largest technology research and design company. Though as a percentage of their revenues - recently increased to over $100M for the first time - SBIR-STTR work is actually quite small, FMI has been by far the largest player in terms of number of SBIR awards. This arena will be a quite different place from now on. Foster Miller engages in a range of work in a diversity of fields including materials, photonics, environmental, medical instrumentation, robotics, electromagnetics and energy, and fuel. Staff includes research scientists in the fields of aerospace, mechanical, process, electrical, thermal, chemical, robotic, nuclear, material engineers, metallurgists, chemists, polymer scientists, and physicists. Firm has spun off several companies to exploit the commercial opportunities presented by previous work and ties to other firms. These include Aztex – Developers of equipment and products to improve the properties of composites. Foster-Miller Technologies – Developers of biomedical devices, machinery systems, and measurement and diagnostic systems. Gridcom – Designers and manufacturers of voltage and current sensors. LAST Armor – Manufacturers of composite appliqué tiles for military personnel carriers and aircraft. Sensiv – Developers of a unique family of remote fiber optic sensors. Superex – Licensors of processing technology for liquid crystal polymers (LCP)
