Public Profile

Employing a proprietary catalytic process, Glucan Biorenewables LLC is producing furan derivatives from biomass: from C5 and C6 sugars.. The furfural platform is being used to launch other value-added co-products: 5-hydroxyl-methyl furfural (HMF) and downstream derivatives. The technology enables conversion of biomass at anticipated lower capital costs than current competitive processes. This advantage can be used to build a furan derivative biorenewable chemicals platform that produces the fundamental building blocks for intermediate chemicals used in wide variety of applications. This platform will be used to launch other higher value products including 5-hydroxyl-methyl furfural (HMF) and its downstream derivatives. The platform can take advantage of a variety of biomass feedstock including corn cob, corn stover, bagasse, and oat hulls to deliver biorenewable chemicals. Founded with technology from the laboratory of Dr. James Dumesic of University of Wisconsin-Madison and intellectual capital from the Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC) at Iowa State University., Glucan Bionewables also has an R&D lab in Madison, WI. In 2015, in a highly competitive situation at the BIO World Congress the firm was one of only five firm worldwide to be selected for Sofinnova Renewable Chemistry Start-Up Award
