ATLANTA- Monday, August 28, 2017, The King Center will host its second highly anticipated Beloved Community Talks: Let's Bridge the Racial Divide. This LIVE event will take place at Ebenezer Baptist Church in the New Horizon Sanctuary from 6:00 p.m. ET to 7:30 p.m. ET. This event is FREE to the public and will be livestreamed on http://www.belovedcommunitytalks.org and http://www.thekingcenter.org as well as The King Center's Twitter and Facebook pages. The moderators for this Beloved Community talks are Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center, and Dr. Kendra King Momon, Professor of Politics at Oglethorpe University. Lead conversationalists for this courageous conversation include, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Social Activist Tamika Mallory, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Gloria Morrow, GOP Committeewoman Ginger Howard, and Faith Leader and FOX News Contributor, Evangelist Alveda King.
"We had no idea when we scheduled this Beloved Community Talk, we would be at such a volatile place in our nation. The hate and violence we witnessed in Charlottesville, Virginia was very disturbing but unfortunately not surprising. What we witnessed on the campus of the University of Virginia is a byproduct and manifestation of a deeper pain and a cancer America has ignored for many years. We did not just wake up and find ourselves in this hour. As a nation, we have never truly dealt with racism and now we are being forced to finally deal with our past and the deep rooted sins of racism. Our nation is hurting and needs healing...we, as a people, need healing. We cannot afford to allow this cancer to continuously plague generations to come. We owe it to our children to be courageous in this hour, which is why we started these conversations. My father once said, 'I am convinced that men hate each other because they fear each other. They fear each other because they don't know each other, and they don't know each other because they don't communicate with each other, and they don't communicate with each other because they are separated from each other...' The goal of these conversations is to create an environment conducive to open, honest, and unapologetic conversations that are civil; bring people out of their comfort zone to promote understanding and to ultimately influence equitable change to the national and global infrastructure." stated Dr. Bernice A. King, the youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
The focus of the Let's Bridge the Racial Divide campaign is to facilitate courageous conversations with the goal of people working together to produce sustainable, relevant solutions that heal the racial disconnect and cultivate peace and justice across urban, suburban, and rural America. The campaign, which started during 2017 King Holiday, will be a national catalyst to unify and galvanize people from different ideological, cultural, socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds. The goal is to engage various sectors of society, including media, corporate, faith-based, education, criminal justice, government and entertainment. For this particular conversation we are focusing on women and their role and responsibility in healing the racial divide.
The theme of this Beloved Community Talks (BCT) event is "Women...the Soul of a Nation" and will focus on "the voice and responsibility of women in "Bridging the Racial Divide. This is in honor of our Founder, Coretta Scott King, and is also to commemorate the 54th Anniversary of the "I Have a Dream Speech".
Dr. Bernice King explains the reason the woman's voice in so important in this hour, "My mother once said, 'Women, if the soul of the nation is to be saved, you must become its soul.' I believe we are in the season my mother spoke of...where women must become the soul of the nation. Life comes through us and I believe we have a responsibility to cultivate and nurture the soul of this nation in this critical hour. Our hope is that this courageous conversation with these powerful women will help inspire others to set a goal to discover how we can organize our strength into compelling power and find viable solutions for the issues of racism in our nation and ultimately our global community.
The King Center has created a conversation toolkit on the belovedcommunitytalks.org website to help individuals learn how to facilitate and engage in a "courageous conversation". The King Center also offers special training on Dr. King's principles and methodology, (Nonviolence365), which equips individuals to live a nonviolent lifestyle. The King Center is committed to continuing the work of facilitating communication that builds community, alleviates fear, and bridges the racial divide."
