The term "low-code" is getting a lot of play in recent months -- and for good reason. In a world where cycle times are shrinking every day across all aspects of our businesses, "low-code platforms" present a way to move faster, be more efficient and serve customers more effectively. Who doesn't want more of that?

Industry analyst firm Forrester defines low-code as "platforms that enable rapid application delivery with a minimum of hand-coding, and quick setup and deployment, for systems of engagement." As Forrester's definition suggests, low-code is closely associated with application development platforms. And that's appropriate because in the new world order being driven by mobile, almost every organization has to accelerate their rate of development for new applications and services.

But low-code's value is just as relevant in business process management (BPM), customer relationship management (CRM) and project management (PM). Here's why:

Low-code is made for the mobile/digital era.

According to Information Age, we are living at the beginning of the digital era, where the majority of the human population are now computer and network users (nearly 100% of those are under 30). And many of us are beginning to spend more time on our smartphones than our desktops. This shift requires us to re-think the business processes we have in place to serve our customers and adjust them on the fly. Low-code BPM, CRM and PM platforms enable us to make these changes much more quickly and easily -- and with a lot less technical expertise, than is required with our current applications and systems.

Low-code enables you to deliver what your customers want, faster and less expensively.

Technology Journalist Paul Rubens says it perfectly in CIO -- "Low-code, rapid development platforms provide a way to incorporate user feedback into apps during development. This improves the turnaround time for consumer-facing applications while ensuring that projects don't turn into white elephants." The same feedback applies to how you manage your business processes that impact the customer experience. Low-code platforms let you choose the business processes you want to update or modify and do it immediately, rather than waiting to do it as part of a larger project that requires specialized resources.

Low-code platforms empower the business.

Bringing it back to Forrester, the firm says low-code platforms don't just "let developers work more quickly. It's also that the platforms expand who can be a developer, and include far more people than those who typically write applications in enterprises." Low code BPM, CRM and PM platforms empower business analysts, process owners and project managers to own their processes and outcomes. They can make adjustments when needed without having to depend on IT groups that already have too much on their plate with the explosion of mobile, BYOD, new cyber security concerns and demands for other new services from the business.

If you want to position your organization to keep pace in the digital era, look for opportunities to move to low-code (and even no-code) platforms. You'll make your business processes more agile and responsive to your customers while reducing your costs and increasing innovation across your organization.
