Power for Humanity Inc, spun out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, develops biotechnology that uses proteins to create Natural Power Units (NPUs) to either charge or replace batteries in small portable devices. The technology uses a bacteria species, Geobacter, that has been shown to produce a small electric current on thin film nanowires and only require ambient air for power generation. The firm aims to create biodegradable batteries that are powered on air.
