[Tempe] -- October 23, 2020 -- EnKoat, an advanced materials company that is developing energy efficient building coatings to combat climate change is named in Cleantech Group's New 50 to Watch List as one of the companies finding solutions to combat the climate crisis.

The 2020 50 to Watch is the second annual list of the top early-stage private companies delivering innovative solutions to combat the climate crisis. The entrepreneurs in the list are creating new technologies and business models that could solve the plastics crisis, regenerate soils, seed new forests, create climate-positive buildings and end desertification.

"This is a great news for us, and we thank the Cleantech group for featuring us on the 50 to Watch list. At EnKoat, we believe that achieving carbon neutrality, getting to net-zero and beyond is one of the key challenges our world is facing right now due to the detrimental effects posed by climate change and the energy crisis. We are excited in our journey to address these challenges," said Dr. Aashay Arora, co-founder of EnKoat.

"We are proud of our journey so far with EnKoat and we have come a long way since its inception. Being acknowledged in the 50 to Watch list provides us a great platform to reach out to a global audience in our efforts to fight climate change," said Dr. Matthew Aguayo, co-founder of EnKoat.

Through fundamental research as well as small business grants via the National Science Foundation (SBIR Phase I) and the Wells Fargo IN2 program, EnKoat has been able to make significant strides in their product development in the past year. EnKoat's proof-of-concept and pilot projects have demonstrated significant savings in heating and cooling costs, and subsequent reduction in carbon emissions.

"Despite a worsening climate crisis and inaction from world leaders, this year's 50 to Watch companies show us that with dedication and innovation, a climate-positive future is possible," said Jules Besnainou, Director Cleantech Group.

To arrive at the companies on the list, Cleantech Group put together a diverse panel of more than 30 early-stage investment and innovation experts from five continents. The Expert Panel nominated the companies they were most impressed with, focusing on innovative solutions to the climate crisis. Next, those nominations were combined with Cleantech Group nominations and added to research on early-stage public awards. The resulting 500 nominations were put through qualitative and impact filters. All nominations were weighted according to their relevance, keeping a sectoral and geographical balance. A shortlist of 150 companies was agreed. The Expert Panel then reviewed and scored this shortlist to arrive at the final 50.

The complete list of 50 companies was revealed on 23 October 2020
