Louisiana Multi-Functional Materials Group is developing a sealant with two-way shape memory polymers. In general, two-way shape memory polymers can change shape when heated and return to their original shape when cooled. With a focus of developing a cost-effective sealant for expansion gaps and for cracks in paving or bridge decks. It is noted that lthough a variety of sealants has been used for this type of application, tmost fail to seal cracks and joints properly because they expand when heated and contract when cooled. The new sealant is designed to do the opposite -- expand when cooled and contract when heated. Such a capacity c/would limit the thermal movement of jointed structures during extreme weather conditions, limiting damage and the need for repairs and maintenance
