Spun out of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Seatrec Inc develops renewable energy technology with applications in oceanic, terrestrial, and extra-terrestrial environments. The company's technology began to take shape in 2005 when the firm's founder assembled a team at JPL to develop a system to harvest energy from ocean temperature differences that exist between warm surface water and cold water at depth. The first product that came out of this research was SOLO-TREC, the first environmentally powered underwater vehicle to utilize Thermal RECharging (TREC) technology. The TREC Battery also can be integrated with other platforms including profiling moorings. Described as Energy harvesting for ocean drones, Seatrec designs and manufactures systems that generate electricity from naturally occurring temperature differences in ocean waters with modules enabling oceanographic researchers to extend mission life and optimize data capture in the most eco-friendly manner possible.
