In late August 2018 it was announced that Apple had acquired Aknonia to provide the larger firm with lenses for augmented reality glasses. Akonia Holographics, LLC develops advanced data storage technologies based on holography. Holographic data storage (HDS) offers the promise of being able to preserve the worldâs burgeoning digital data in a highly stable three-dimensional photopolymer medium with a proven archival life of many decades. Akonia was founded by senior holography scientists and holds an expansive technology portfolio including functioning, in form-factor pre-production drive prototypes, a pilot drive manufacturing line, disk media manufacturing equipment, and over 200 patents pertaining to holographic systems and materials. Akonia purchased many of their patents from InPhase Technologies following that firm having declared bankruptcy. Given major advances in holographic data storage, the firm is now supporting the burgeoning Augmented Reality (AR) headset market. Aknonia's HoloMirrorTM technology suite employs a proprietary volume holographic media and know-how to uniquely enable thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images.
