Public Profile

The Washoe Sleep Disorders Center (WSDC) patients include children and adults of all ages referred by pediatricians, internists, family and general docs, as well as specialists from all disciplines. The center is equipped to do studies on premature babies with infant apnea, who are at increased risk for crib death (SIDS), as well as the aged, who suffer from insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and even seasonal affective disorders (SAD). Sleep Disorders Medicine is a peculiar combination where traditional, paramedical and non-traditional forms of medicine come together (e.g., dentistry, psychology, chiropractic and naturopathy) and where the Managed Care Model, interested in reducing medical costs through preventive medical approaches, is integrated into the general traditional medical model.Neurodevelopmental and Neurodiagnostic Center and Laboratory (NDC), a multidisciplinary center for the evaluation of children with neurological disorders. As an extension of the neurophysiological laboratory (which provides evoked potentials and standard EEG, 24 ambulatory and quantitive EEG, used primarily for the study of epilepsy), it became clear that there was a need to provide first-rate professional services in the field of sleep disorders medicine. The five major goals and interests of the ASDA are: 1. to promote the education of medical personnel about sleep disorders so that patients will be properly diagnosed and treated; 2. to promote public education so that people with sleep disorders will seek help; 3. to provide better access to medical care for sleep disorders, especially in rural Nevada areas; 4. to provide affordable testing and treatment for all, including those with limited means; 5. to promote research to identify new sleep disorder treatments. Principals of the firm have developed several related inventions (e.g., a patent-pending sensor that measures drowsiness, which will help prevent truck and car accidents, as well as a series of calculators-The Sleep Manager-that will help avoid jet-lab and shift work fatigue).
