In November 2002, GE Specialty Materials, a unit of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) completed the acquisition of the assets of Advanced Ceramics Corporation and Advanced Ceramics International Corporation (ACC and ACIC). With headquareters in Strongsville, OH, the Advanced Ceramics business produces a breadth of products; it manufactures boron nitride crucibles that are used to grow wafers used in wireless phones and LED’s. Advanced Ceramics makes heaters that increase efficiencies in semiconductor chip making equipment. Additionally, its boron nitride powders add softness and smoothness to cosmetics. Its boron nitride powder’s thermal management properties are also useful in applications ranging from automotive packaging to cooling the space shuttle’s landing gear. Advanced Ceramics also makes high temperature ceramics that evaporate metal in the production of glossy plastics used in gift-wrap, bottle labels and potato chip bags. To be known as GEAdvanced Ceramics, the business will become part of the GE Quartz business within GE Specialty Materials. The acquisition is the first for GE Quartz. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Advanced Ceramics Corporation is the world's largest producer of boron nitride powders, shapes, and coatings as well as other specialty ceramics. Developed for their versatility, these ceramics feature a unique combination of properties that make them ideal for use in a wide range of applications from cosmetics to semiconductors.
