Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) is an American shipbuilding company formed on March 31, 2011 as a spin-off of Northrop Grumman. It was formerly known as Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB), created on January 28, 2008 by the merger of Northrop Grumman's two shipbuilding sectors, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems and Northrop Grumman Newport News. The company takes its name from the founders of its two main facilities: Collis P. Huntington (Newport News) and Robert Ingalls (Pascagoula). Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. designs, builds, overhauls, and repairs ships primarily for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. It offers nuclear-powered ships, such as aircraft carriers and submarines; and non-nuclear ships, including surface combatants, expeditionary warfare/amphibious assault, coastal defense surface ships, and national security cutters. The company also operates as a provider of refueling and complex overhaul services for nuclear-powered aircraft carriers; a full-service systems provider for the design, engineering, construction, and life cycle support of major programs for surface ships; and a provider of fleet support and maintenance services for the U.S. Navy. In addition, it provides a range of support services, including fabrication, construction, equipment, and technical services, as well as product sales to energy and petrochemical industries, as well as government customers.
