Functioning as one of the most research-intensive industries in the United States, BIO members are involved in the R&D of health care, agricultural and environmental biotechnology products.
US Biotech Industry
Biotechnology Products On The Market:
More than 40 biotechnology drug products and vaccines are already approved in the United States.
Biotech companies have 272 drugs in human clinical trials and hundreds more in early development.
In agriculture, biotech-derived tomatoes with extended shelf life and better processing qualities, squash, and luarate canola have been approved for the market along with corn, cotton, potatoes and soybeans with built-in resistance.
Hundreds of EPA-registered biopesticides are in use.
Biotechnology industrial enzymes such as proteases and amylases are widely used in laundry detergent, corn starch and corn sweetener production, the stonewashing of denim, and the treatment of leather goods. In environmental applications, biotechnology is used to treat hazardous waste in soil, water and the air, as well as in applications to prevent pollution.
