Chaired by Daniel O. Hill, Office of Technology, U.S. Small Business Administration, a panel of appointed judges (not yet selected - Spring 1998), all very familiar with the SBIR Program, will make the decisions on final awardee listings from the submitted Nomination packages.

The appointed panelists for the 1997 selection process were:

  • Jonathan Baron, SBIR Program Manager, U.S. Department of Defense
  • Terry E. Bibbens, Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Office of Advocacy, U.S. Small Business Administration
  • Robert M. Pap, Accurate Automation, Chattanooga, TN

Be REMINDED that in the selection for Tibbetts Award recognition, there is no intent to compare one type of project against another or to set one area of the country in competition with another.

Provided the standards of quality can be maintained, the effort will be to make at least ONE AWARD per STATE. However, significant regional variation is assumed both in terms of scale and type of achievement. What, in the judgment of the Nominators, has been accomplished with SBIR resources in one geographic area and/or has had important impact is likely to be very different from one community to another - rural area versus industrial region; small state against large etc; small, start-up firm versus larger, established entity; complex, large-scale project as opposed to a specific application.

The decisions of the judges are expected in mid-late July. Selected nominees will be notified by email at that time. Shortly after notification of the Awardees, that listing will be posted here.
