Focus and objective: Development of the NIH Roadmap was the initiative of Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, soon after he assumed the leadership of NIH. With input from the all parts of the NIH constituency, the Roadmap is designed o provide a framework to give direction to medical research during the 21st century. A basic premise is that opportunities for discoveries have never been greater, but that the complexity of biology remains a daunting challenge. Beginning in 2004, and consistent with the major themes of the Roadmap, NIH is moving towards organization of its efforts around creation of interdisciplinary research teams and stimulating new ways of combining skills and disciplines in both the physical and biological sciences. Where the SBIR program fits into this process; what differences are likely in the type of endeavors in which NIH SBIR firms will now tackle will be the focus of this session.

At the event, following a brief overview presentation referencing aspects of those concerns, the panel will provide their input. Audience participation is anticipated.
