What is this about?
It should be underscored that this is
NOT about how to get SBIR awards
NOR about how to manage the federal procurement and/or project process
Agency sponsored and State organized events are far more appropriately structured to address those needs
NEITHER, except indirectly, is focus here on raising external capital
To an extent, this event IS about
using SBIR participation and fund- ing effectively to achieve business objectives
    Primarily, however, it is about
examining the available options in the context of radically changing business conditions and
considering the range of practical issues involved in the process of
   -- bringing technology to use-condition
   --
drawing down/realizing the value of created technical assets.
How is this organized
The underpinning event-design is one of
overviewing a particular area of business development interest -- the restructuring economy, prevailing conditions in various industries, issues in technology marketing, changing capital markets, patent activity and IP issues, the concept of Intellectual Assets, collaborations, valuation and deal-making, M&A activity etc
anchoring that discussion in detailed analysis of the relevant SBIR data. A community of now over 15,000 firms, aspects of the collective SBIR condition effectively mirror the current state of technology development. Grounded in the exquisitely detailed SBIR Awardees databases maintained by idi (this event organizer) some findings may be unexpected.
 and, where relevant,
offering live-cases of firms engaged in that space - not as examples of "how-to" but primarily to establish the basis from which effective discussion of the relevant issues can proceed
The Phase 3 Challenge:
Do these Awardees need to re-invent themselves
OR are there other options?
Setting this in context:
With primary emphasis on opening up the thinking of participants -- SBIR-involved firms, Technology Seekers and advisors alike -- this by-invitation convening of some of the very-best of the SBIR community is being held in smaller space with this the only event on-site.
This targeted group approach and location-decision is deliberate. It supports well the type of assembly designed to engage directly those in attendance through interactive working sessions live cases and role playing clinics and analytical sessions Talk-Show format, interviews and panel discussions, and provision of substantial opportunity for personal and professional exchange
Addressing the Phase 3 Challenge:
With their professional training and experience as scientists and engineers, the business challenge of "Phase 3" that SBIR Awardees must face demands a quite different set of skills.
Collectively, leading-edge SBIR firms -- some 4800-5000 of the total -- represent what is now the largest single concentration of technical talent anywhere. However, few as yet think of SBIR Awardees in those terms.
Individually, the achievements of some SBIR-involved firms have been impressive - and many of these will be discussed. However, far more Awardees are falling short of Phase 3 than are finishing the process. The developed capabilites and technologies of these firms are largely un-used and un-realized.
Among some of the most technically competent, those critical experience elements required to address the challenges of "Phase 3" are largely missing. Despite the increasing efforts of the agencies to support and to 'train' their awardees, large numbers of Awardees are struggling

to bring their technology to use-condition and,

not always the same thing - effectively to realize the
value of what has been created.
