SBIR-STTR Technology Transfer Office |

Collectively, SBIR-STTR Awardees represent the greatest single concentration of technical talent in the United States. The extensive data compiled by the Innovation Development Institute -- parent company for this site and longtime SBIR-STTR advocate -- shows that firms which are and/or have been SBIR-STTR involved currently employ well over 750,000 people. Importantly, our estimates are that of these three-quarter million employees well over 50% have graduate degrees in the engineering and scientific disciplines. This factors to about 400,000 qualified engineers and scientists in SBIR-STTR Involved firms -- many doing leading-edge work in every field of technology endeavor.
To set that 400,000 number in context: recent National Science Board data indicates that the number of practicing engineers and scientists employed by U.S. universities total less than 150,000. In other words, SBIR-STTR involved firms currently employ almost THREE TIMES as many graduate engineers and scientists as every academic institution in the United States added together. Accessing that talent: Through the Technology Tranfer Office (or equivalent) that is now a part of almost all academic institutions - one can
- readily find out what research is underway in the various departments
- access published reports and attend specialist seminars
- identify and recruit collaborators, build team efforts and arrange sponsored research
- and - the bedrock activity of value drawdown - through negotiated license agreements acquire rights to the technology addressed in the approximately 3000 university patents issued annually
The compelling question which demands to be asked ...where is the equivalent SBIR-STTR Technology Transfer facility?
Every TWO hours: To date, over 56,500 patents have already issued to SBIR-STTR involved firms -- an issuance rate that is now accelerating to that of over 4200 a year. See SBIR-STTR Issued Patents for some of the analyses. That now calculates to an SBIR-STTR Issued Patent EVERY TWO HOURS The obvious question is -- beyond the (often limited) efforts of each firm for itself -- how else is the full development of this substantial value being supported? Several federal agencies have allocated resources to give their awardees business exposure and preliminary contact. This is generally tackled through sponsored events and website postings, through various types of subsidized training and business development support. These efforts have been useful and should continue.
HOWEVER, these types of activities are not generally within the professional experience of Program Managers and, critically, are not part of their job description. Further, their focus must inevitably be on those projects which were funded in their agency -- which proves, in most cases, to be quite limiting. Considered collectively, SBIR-STTR capabilities and achievements are so much more than that. It is our considered judgment that too much of that talent and achievement is currently unrecognized and almost entirely un-used. THEREFORE, we are setting up to do something about that

We're not quite there yet -- but the current initiative of the Innovation Development Institute is to use our extensive databases and exquisitely detailed information about the talents and skills of SBIR-STTR Awardees to establish an SBIR-STTR Technology Transfer Office. With components to be offered offline and online. You are encouraged to bookmark this page and to check back regularly. In the meantime
- If you are an SBIR-STTR Awardee -- you might want to update and supplement the Profile we carry here on you. Company Profiling: Update What we already know about you is often fairly extensive. However, the more we know about your developed capabilities and achievements, the greater likelihood that we can bring you business opportunity
- If you are with a State SBIR-STTR Support organization -- you might want to access the data on firms in your State to encourage/undertake their Profile updating.
- If you are interested in accessing SBIR-STTR talent and technologies as a user/buyer of technology -- you might want to contact us to discuss what you have in mind.
